For 17 years, our research has been focused on two primary goals:

  1. Reducing the need for invasive treatments
  2. Improving surgical outcomes

Ongoing Research

SHF is engaged in ongoing clinical studies for improving neck and back pain.  The study activities are monitored by an Institutional Review Board (IRB), an ethical review team that monitors all study activities and events to make sure that patients are safe and receive proper study treatments.

The Foundation has launched one of the most ambitious and innovative treatment outcome projects to date. SpineOnline is a nationwide, multi-centered technology project to prove the effectiveness of spinal treatment options.  Through SpineOnline, SHF intends to compile the definitive collection of provider and patient reported treatment outcomes.

SpineOnline will enable treatment options to be evaluated using both physician and patient reported outcomes.  This unique approach will allow us to uniformly collect information about spine treatments and their applications and prove which treatments are the most effective and result in the best possible patient outcomes.

Through the use of computers, tablets, and mobile devices, patients and physicians across the country will complete a series of confidential questionnaires.  These questionnaires will follow the patient’s progress throughout their treatment and recovery process.

SpineOnline will allow medical providers across the United States to contribute to and access de-identified patient outcomes.  This will place hard data regarding treatment options in the hands of physicians.  Recording the outcomes, both from the physician and patient perspective, will be instrumental in evaluating the effectiveness of both and surgical and non-surgical treatment options, patient recovery times, and patient reported outcomes.

SpineOnline will aid physicians with quality improvement and allow them to provide an accurate prognosis based on a pool of patients sharing similar qualifiers.  The ability to definitively quantify and manage expectations will improve their patient’s understanding of their health status, empowering them to take an active role in their health care, become self-advocates, and communicate effectively with their health care team.  A better perspective on patient outcomes will not only fuel innovations and drive invaluable research, but will shape the future of spine care.
